Wednesday Review… Daiwa Emcast BR

Daiwa Emcast BR Reel

For today’s Wednesday review our good friends at Total Coarse Fishing take a look at the Daiwa Emcast BR Reels, a new addition to the ever growing BR range here’s what they had to say…

Reels used for Piking have one of the most punishing jobs there is. If they’re dedicated to the species then they’ll have spent most of the year packed away. Come October they’ll hopefully be respooled, taken out to a cold, muddy, wet bank where they’ll be manhandled by fish-gut-covered fingers, before facing the pressures of casting out big deadbaits and taming hard-fighting predators.

It’s a tough routine, especially in winter conditions where they’ll be battered by the elements. With that in mind then, what you’re looking for is a unit that isn’t all frills and thrills, but that will just work when, where and how you want.

If there’s one company that can deliver that, it’s Daiwa. And in the Emcast 5000 it’s done a great job.

The usual Daiwa quality is present. It’s super-smooth, thanks to eight ball bearings, keeping the large spool turning effortlessly. That comes along with Daiwa’s sought-after AirBail (a light, strong and smooth hollow bail arm), Castlock (making sure your bail arm doesn’t suddenly snap closed on the cast) and Twist Buster – impressive, considering the sub-£100 price tag.

The front-drag system is very smooth and responsive, clicking line off in a manner that gives you confidence should you hook something special. It’s also very easily adjusted thanks to a large knob at the front of the spool. And for those who would use the free-spool facility (the BR bit in the title standing for Bite ‘n’ Run), that’s also good quality and easily adjustable at the rear.

Coming with two spools that will hold 250 yards of 17lb line at 0.40mm diameter, the large handle really gives you some cranking power – perfect for pulling in big deads from range – but you’ll also have the choice of swapping the single handle for a more balanced double version that’s included in the package.

Most importantly, though, it’s a tight unit, well built and robust enough to put up with the rough and tumble of winter predator work (or whatever other specimens you put it up against) and still deliver what you need.
