How do fishing lures work?

Terminal tackle such as the lure you choose is vital for every angler, but for the modern lure angler, it is especially important as they rely on it not only to catch their fish but also to tempt the fish in the first place. But how do lures exactly do this?

There is a variety of different fishing lures to choose from, with colour, material, texture and even movement to consider. Lures attract fish by imitating baitfish that the predator usually attacks, drawing them out from their hideouts to take a bite! You can get a variety of colours, some closer to the baitfish’s real appearance, some brighter to be tracked by the angler’s eye. Reflective paint or spinners are added to also draw attention when light hits the lure.

Many lures will have realistic eyes and can really resemble an injured baitfish even down to its movement. Some lures are made from soft rubber, others a harder plastic or even wood with flexible spines to achieve the movement of the fish. Depending on how you reel your line back in will affect the behaviour of the lure as it pulls through the water. There are many styles you can try with lures from cranking to jigging!

You can also purchase lures from Angling Direct with an extra layer of attraction! Some fish respond well to feeling or hear vibrations through the water. That is why you will find that some of our stock will feature lures with rattles inside or with spinner blades on their tails which create noise when moving through the water.

Types of Fishing Lures

There is a plethora of variety in our collection, and we stock a full range of slow sinkers, spoons, spinners, and drop shot lures – as well as jig heads. We stock sets for particular fish – for example, we have pike, perch, and trout lures – so you can buy a collection suited to your target. We also stock lures individually for those looking to expand their collection with a few key items. Whichever prey you’re looking to imitate, whether it be a minnow, a lobworm, or something a little more exotic, we have the lure for you! Not only this, but our range isn’t restricted to freshwater predator fishing. We also stock an impressive selection of lures for sea fishing, so no matter your angling style you’re able to find the perfect tool for the job in hand.

Do you use weights with lures?

You may find some lures with the option t add or remove weights included within the body of lure itself or alternatively you can add a sinker to increase the rate in which the fishing lure will sink in the water. Adding weight to your lure is preferable for when trying to catch bottom feeders or predators that are located deeper in the waters such as bass or catfish.
