In fact, we’re so certain that barrows improve your angling success that we’ve designed one for our own-brand Advanta range – which has practicality and value for money in mind.

When you’re looking for the perfect fishing barrow or trolley for your needs, there are a couple of things you might want to keep in mind. You can use this handy guide as a checklist for your needs in order to ensure that you can get down to your swim or peg quickly and easily.

Design Considerations

Size

One of the most important things to consider when you’re investing in a top-quality fishing barrow is its size. Our range begins with simple barrows which give you a base to pack all your gear onto, so you can take all your tackle down to the bank in one trip.

Angling Direct also stock fully adjustable barrows. These have extending sides and an extending front, allowing you to take a bigger load when you need it. Extending barrows are ideal for the angler who likes to do a mix of quick overnighters and longer session swims, as they offer the perfect mix of being compact and spacious.

However, the amount of gear your barrow can carry is only the first aspect that you need to look into when you’re investing in a top quality fishing barrow. The pack down size of your barrow is almost as important as the amount of gear it can hold – after all, you need to be able to fit it in your boot along with the rest of your luggage.

Some of the barrows we stock come as they are and can simply be lifted and placed into your boot, but most of them will involve some sort of disassembly to get them boot-ready. This can range from removable legs and handles, turning the barrow into a flat pack design, right through to a removable front wheel and folding central support. This is the perfect choice for the angler who wants a large barrow to carry a lot of gear, as its tiny pack down ensures that everything will fit in your boot flawlessly.

Barrow Wheels

Wheels are another hugely important aspect of your barrow purchase and Angling Direct have a variety of wheel setups available in our barrow range. The standard barrow has a single wheel, which is usually placed towards the front of the barrow – wheelbarrow style. This is in tandem with two rear feet, which provide a stand for the barrow when you’re loading and unloading your tackle. The single wheel setup is by far and away the most popular as it allows you to negotiate most terrains with minimal effort.

The second most popular barrow wheel configuration is a three-wheel setup. These are favoured by the angler who likes to carry a lot of gear down to the bank, as well as the angler why knows they will be walking long distances to and from their swim or peg. Unlike the standard single wheel barrow, you don’t have to lift this barrow in order to get it moving – so if you’re someone who struggles with a back pain or such like, then this ‘push and go’ style might be the perfect option for you.

If you’re looking for a match fishing trolley to carry your seatbox down to your peg then you might be looking for a two-wheeled setup instead. Like the single wheeled barrows, these come fitted with two additional legs, too, to provide stability when the trolley isn’t in motion. Unlike barrows, the wheels of the trolley are at the rear and it is manoeuvred by applying pressure down on the handles, rather than by lifting up.

Two-wheel setups have their own set of strengths. Firstly, like tri-wheeled barrows, a four wheeled trolley doesn’t require any exertion on the handles – you simply push and go. This makes this barrow option preferred by the match angler who has a large amount of gear that they like to take down to the bank.

The wheel of your barrow is likely to be the area which is under most strain as you’re moving between swims. As such, it is a good idea to look out for a barrow with wheels that can withstand the pressure of repeated use under heavy loads and over rough terrains. Most of the wheels in our range will have a thick tread, allowing you to traverse the most uneven of surfaces, and will be heavy duty in build. You’ll also find that many of the wheels we stock will be puncture proof, in order to avoid unfortunate bankside accidents, and we also stock a range of spares to fit a number of the different barrows we offer.

Conversion kits are also available, which allow you to change your setup from a single wheeled barrow to a tri-barrow – as well as options which allow you to convert your slim wheel setup into a fat boy setup for additional stability.

Barrow Bags

Once you’ve got your barrow you might want to start looking at the wide range of accessories that we have to offer. More than simply for show, our fishing barrow and trolley accessories really do allow you to up your game on the bank – mostly by providing you with additional storage space on your barrow. Panniers, or side bags, are packs which fit over the sides of your barrow. These allow you to hang tackle from the side of your barrow as well as stacking it on top. You will find that some of the panniers we stock have been specially designed with bait storage in mind and, as such, will help to position heavy bait low on the barrow. Keeping the main weight of the barrow as low down as possible significantly aids with barrow balance, and these side bags ensure that you don’t have to worry about gear toppling as you traverse rough terrain.

As well as side bags, we also stock a range of bags which have been designed to sit on the very front of your barrow. This is the part of the barrow which will likely be angled slightly downwards, so having a sealed bag really allows you to make the most of this space. These front bags come in a range of sizes, from large bags designed to hold your change of clothes, sleeping bag, and pillow, to compact bags designed for your rig safes and smaller tackle boxes. We have bags specially designed for holding your cooking equipment, too, freeing up space in your luggage for other tackle essentials. Remember, these additional bags don’t just allow you to take more gear down to the bank but they also allow you to be more organised. This is especially important if you’re fishing off-barrow, as having more storage bags loaded up with fewer items can significantly reduce the time you spend packing and unpacking on the bank in order to find that one essential item.

Barrow Covers

You can also find a full range of barrow covers. These come in classic carpy colours, including olive, khaki, and camouflage, so you can pick the cover that suits your taste. These covers are designed to keep your gear dry whilst it is on your barrow, which is ideal if you’ve got a long way to barrow in heavy rain or you’re going to be fishing off-barrow during a short and mobile day session. These aren’t intended to be used to hold gear onto your barrow, however, but we do stock a range of bungee cords and barrow straps to keep your gear secured down.

Motorised Barrows

As well as our range of manual barrows, we also stock a range of electric fishing trolleys, these are ideal for the angler who has a lot of gear and who is fed up with struggling over rough terrain. As well as barrows with inbuilt power units, we also stock power converter packs, which allow you to transform your standard barrow into a fully motorised machine. As you might expect, these power barrows are not as cheap as your standard setup, with costs currently exceeding £500 for a high-power setup. If you are interested in a high-power barrow and you don’t want to have to wait for months to save up, you can always make the most of our Direct Credit system. This is an interest-free finance option which allows you to buy products of £300 or more on a fixed-rate repayment scheme.

Barrow Handles

The handle on most barrows will be interchangeable, and there are a couple of options to choose from. Y-handles get their name from the shape, vertical bars style in a ‘Y’ formation. Whereas, cross bar handles are horizontal bars, like that of a wheelbarrow, supported by a cross-bar that gives the barrow structure and stability.

When is comes to carp fishing, getting to your chosen swim easily and conveniently helps set you up for a fantastic session. Lugging around the necessary tackle for even a day ticket session can often prove awkward, problematic and exhausting which is especially true if you are stocking up for a longer session or want a variety of tackle on hand to change up your fishing style as you go! This is where fishing barrows and trolleys come in.

What Do I Need to Look for in a Carp Fishing Barrow?

When you’re looking for the perfect fishing barrow or trolley for your needs, there are a couple of things you might want to keep in mind. First is the size of the barrow, making sure its small enough to fit in the car but big enough to fit your items such as a bedchair, bivvies system, rod holdalls and more. Check the wheels on the barrow or trolley for the terrain you fish at, the barrow handles, if it's motorised and what barrow luggage or covers are available with it; either included or sold separately.
