Sea Fishing For Summer Smoothound - Curse Of The Camera!

The Smoothound is without doubt one of my favourite sea fish and from the months of May to late August they become my primary target species. Invading beaches up and down the country throughout spring and summer, this very pretty, mini-shark, is without doubt one of the hardest fighting sea fish that us UK anglers can catch.

I’ve caught lots of them through the years from both beach and boat and have been lucky enough to catch some specimens too, however I’ve never managed to get any from the shore on camera, so it was a personal target for the year.

Locally the beaches hadn’t been fishing very well, the weed had been horrendous (I’d had the unfortunate pleasure of experiencing this first hand on more than one occasion) and the fish hadn’t arrived in numbers like they had done in previous years. These things combined meant I had to look slightly further afield for some Hound fishing, slightly further north, to the Lincolnshire coast line. It was an area I’d never fished before but it was also an area I knew was famous for Smoothound fishing, especially on the right tides and in the right conditions.

The first trip we had ’off patch’ was a great success, as both myself and fishing friend Justin Grapes managed lots of nice Hounds, nothing massive, but some nice fish up to around 8lb. However, unfortunately it was on a day when we didn’t have the camera!

Fast forward a fortnight and we found ourselves back in the van and back on the road, this time with the camera in tow, for our second Smoothound sortie.

Arriving at a similar time and fishing in a similar set of conditions and tide run, to what we had done first time around, we were extremely confident that the Hounds would arrive. Fresh rigs had been tied and some fine looking Peelers had been added to the bait bucket, surely we couldn’t fail…

To find out exactly how we got on and perhaps find out a few tips along the way, watch this latest instalment, from the waters edge.
