I've grown to like this clothing combination a lot, for the simple reason that it has kept me dry and comfortable all winter, in a variety of conditions.
Rather than trying to incorporate all essential, functional requirements of winter clothing into one 'suit', I now believe that having a supplementary, waterproof outer layer offers better protection from the elements.
Firstly, these are both extremely light and thin garments, which means that they can be stuffed into the odd pocket in your rucksack conveniently, but this is also noticeable when in use, in the sense that you barely notice you're wearing them. This uninhibited feeling is also exaggerated by the stretchy nature of the material, which stretches up to 25 per cent, meaning that it never tightens and becomes restrictive when you're moving about. We use a wide range of movement doing everyday things while fishing, from kneeling down to full arm extensions when giving it the big chuck. These accommodate movement seamlessly and are not a hindrance in the slightest. I have never experienced this with traditional waterproofs, and for that reason along, these are impressive and valuable garments to fish in.
Their next trump-card winner is the extreme durability of the fabric. The places I fish are, more often than not, choked with brambles and hawthorn, and in the past these have revealed the pitfalls of other clothing quickly. I've had no such letdowns with these and considering how thin the material actually is, it has to be one of the touchiest substances on earth! The probability of punching it accidentally is nigh-on zero, and as we have proved with previous tests, trying to turn the hole into a full-blown tear is a task best left to the incredible Hulk!
Last but by no means least is their ability to keep you ventilated, as well as dry. Never before have I used waterproofs that, especially during the humid conditions associated with the wet weather, have not made me sweat, and therefore wet on the inside. These provide a reliable barrier against water ingress, but are also genuinely breathable. This is another reason why I rate these so highly - they keep you comfortable and dry, not just the latter. Value for money, considering their value in use, is exceptional, and for that reason, to seal the deal, I really cannot recommend these garments highly enough. This is brilliant clothing that fulfils everything a good set of waterproofs should, and more!
