Wednesday Review… Shimano Baitrunner ST-RB

As seen in Coarse Fishing Answers Magazine… Coarse-Fishing-Answers-Magazine

Over the years Shimano has steadily built up a reputation for producing magnificent reels across all fields of coarse fishing here in the UK. The company invented the 'Baitrunner' concept that is now used, albeit with different brand names, by most other reel manufacturers out there.

Excelling in most angling disciplines, Shimano reels are perhaps best known for their performance within the Carp and Specimen sectors, and thats where the Baitrunner 10000ST RB comes in… but not at the price you'd expect from a Shimano reel.

The 10000ST RB is Shimano's entry-level reel in the 10000-size range, but don't think for one minute that because the price is lower than usual for Shimano reels you'll experience a slump in quality.

First up, in keeping with some of its more expensive relatives, the looks of this particular model are stunning. Understated graphics and that slick profile we all know and love are present, meaning you'll look good on the bank while waiting for that specimen to come along.

Apart from it's looks, one of the first things I noticed about this reel was it's lightness, and although a lot of the reels time will probably be spent sat on alarms its still nice to have that fast pick-up and lightness when casting and playing fish - for a reel that you can pick up for around £60 this is a great feature.

The Baitrunner feature is situated at the back of the reel and is very easy to operate - one simple push or pull and you're in and out of Baitrunner mode. Added to this the reel features a balanced double handle, again a nice feature, while the strong aluminium AR-C spool provides you with a reel component that won't let you down.

The line lay is also another plus point of the 10000ST RB: if you're looking to cast accurately and at distance, line lay is a crucial factor and I can have no complaints here.

I'd use this reel for Carp fishing and Pike deadbaiting, where you need a bit of grunt in your tackle. Shimano also sells the reel in a 6000 size, which would suit other species such as Tench, Bream, Barbel and smaller sized Carp.

For price versus performance you won't find many reels to match the 10000ST RB - a real gem in the Shimano Specimen range.
