Wednesday Review... Petzl Tactikka Plus Headlamp

With its militaristic styling the Petzl Tactikka Plus headlamp looks as though it will appeal to hard-core carp anglers.

The model that hit the TSF desk was tricked out in a nice camouflage colouring, but there is an all-black version too (that would be the SAS then!).

However, I do know that it’s not just carp angers that like a bit of camou, and a bit of camou prejudice shouldn’t be allowed to stand in the way of a good product if it does the job.

Petzl is top range when it comes to headlamps, and the Tactikka Plus is among its flagship models.

On full whack it produces 160 lumens in ‘boost mode’, which is a lot of light, and you get that by double clicking after the third click in on the easy to operate soft button. There are three lower light options of five lumens, 40 lumens and 110 lumens on the white LED, which you get to first in the sequence on a normal click.

If you really want to get into stealth mode, holding the button in for longer switches on a five-lumen red LED, which is great for tackling up while retaining your night vision, while a double click in that mode gets the red light flashing – handy if you are in a spot of bother.

A nice feature with the lamp is that it can easily be angled for close work, which keeps things discreet and is a boon when tying rigs or rebaiting.A long hold on the button allows you to switch between red or white.

The headband is nice and soft and it is easily adjustable – it also comes with a clip fitting, making it easy to slip on without pulling your hat over your eyes. Even better, the headband is already fitted so there’s no fiddling about trying to get it sorted yourself. (Am I alone in finding the fitting of straps to things a bit of a chore?)

The battery life is decent on the torch, thanks to it having a reserve mode that drops the power down to a minimum.

The instructions that come with the lamp are easy to follow, with good information on the packaging too.

It takes 3AAA batteries and YES, they are included – they are Duracells too. Nice touch that. This is a smashing head torch – reliable, well-made and from a manufacturer of repute.
