ESP Supergrade Waterproof Clothing Review

With its RipStop material, ESP’s Supergrade apparel has long been admired and used by Carp anglers who appreciate quality and protective clothing.

I reckon all of us at the office have some of this stuff at some point, the salopettes being a firm favourite of mine before they eventually gave up the ghost after several years of use while fishing.

The new range has been revamped to offer a more modern fit but with the same reliability and comfort of the original Supergrade material. It boasts an amazing 25,000 hydrostatic head, compared with most other clothing’s maximum of around 5,000. This means it is just about as waterproof as clothing can ever get. It’s also surprisingly breathable for such a waterproof material and we’re all clamouring to get our hands on some for the winter ahead.

Although not a thermal suit, there is an element of insulation and we’ve also found this to be ample so far. In fact, on one recent outing where temperatures dropped markedly, just a T-shirt and hoodie was all that was needed underneath to make me extremely toasty!

I particularly like the fact that the material is a fair bit ‘quieter’ than some others.

As well as the salopettes, ESP has offered a standard trouser. I prefer the back protection that the salopettes offer but these trousers are still very comfortable and offer the same level of waterproofing and breathable features.

Finally, the jacket is extremely comfortable and doesn’t feel in any way restrictive. It’s also just the right balance between weighty protection and lightweight comfort. All zips, pockets and Velcro are durable and well finished, a mark of ESP’s high standards, and the olive green is very much in keeping with the Carp scene, which seems to have left camou clothing well and truly behind.

A real smart looking jacket which still provides plenty of freedom of movement.

Featuring a rip-stop shell which is tough yet soft and quiet, plus a rip-stop lining.

Totally waterproof and windproof with exceptional breathable qualities, other features include an adjustable fitted hood with a Velcro closure.

The high collar is snug and comfy and prevents draughts plus there are double hand warmer pockets with a zipped internal security pocket and the full length YKK zip is protected by a Velcro sealed rain flap.

The adjustable cuffs also feature an internal neoprene cuff which enhances warmth and prevents water ingress when casting.
