The biggest thing you’ll cast in coarse fishing is a dead or livebait for predators. With fish over 1lb liable to be used, trailing leads, floats and rig components with them, this means you need the tool to cast them properly.

Deadbait rods are designed for that job.

They come with the power through the rod to be able to punch out big baits, set hooks and still retain the ability to play fish properly. The latest offering is the new Drennan E-Sox Piker 12ft Bait rod from Drennan, and it’s a beaut.

What it offers is a great combination of power and feel to allow you to fish how you want while also enjoying smaller fish if and when you hook them.

The guts of the rod come from a lovely, slim (for the rod type) blank that offers plenty of poke and is rated at a 3lb test curve. This will give you the ability to fire out decent-sized baits a good range without being over loaded by the weight when the rod compresses. We were casting out 10oz Roach on a float setup a good range with ease.

Get a run and you can hit into it with a good amount of force to set the hooks at range, even on mono. The line pick-up on a float setup is also impressive thanks to the action and the 12ft length. And then the fun starts.



You’ll think that this rod doesn’t have much in the way of movement behind the tip, but get a fish on the hook and you can be confident of holding hard against it without risking your hook-hold as the rest of the blank curves around in a responsive and progressive arc.

The harder the fish pulls, the more the rod gives, giving you complete confidence that you’re in control.

Like all Drennan rods it’s designed for purpose, with an understated, workmanlike look to suit its abilities. Full-cork handle, twin legged SiC guides, good quality screw-fit reel mount… it’s a lovely looking package and a great rod for the money. Well worth a very close look.
