I’ve been eagerly awaiting these bobbins ever since my mate at Cygnet, John Walker, revealed that the Sheffield-based company was working with Muddy Waters to launch them to a wider market.
The best thing about it all, as John explained, was that the original founder and inventor of the Muddy Waters range, Mark Walters, would be involved and that the products would be exactly the same as they’ve always been.
So, the Cygnet Bite Indication range, in conjunction with Muddy Waters, was born and its hitting the shelves of tackle shops as I write this.
The move made perfect sense because it would mean that the impressive Muddy range would be made available to far more shops and anglers, supply chains would be improved and, best of all, Cygnet was sticking with the tried-and-trusted designs.
I have used Muddy Waters bobbins and accessories for as long as I can remember and I honestly cannot say a bad word about the. They’re not only functional - especially with the Kippa Line Clip allowing easy use of slack and tight lines - but they look superb as well. Lets be honest, this is important to all of us, but to a tackle tart who openly admits to an unhealthy infatuation with bobbins, it’s literally amazing. Well, they do say that we all have our guilty pleasures and bobbins are most definitely some of mine.
The heads, known as Clingas, come in several sizes.
The smallest, the Old Skool, curry huge favour with the carry brigade and are ultra-sensitive, ideal for ultra slack-line fishing. The next size, Clinga Lites, are great all rounders, as are my favourites, the Dumpy Clingas. Moving up in size, we than have the Clinga Standard, followed by the Clinga Long Range and the enormous Clinga XL and XXL. So, there really is a bobbin for every occasion and for each anglers preference.
As you’d expect, the acrylic heads come in a range of colours and there’s also a PTFE version in each style. These are my favourites but I’ve also taken a bit of a fancy to the green versions in the new range.
As well as the Clinga heads, which I have focused on, there are a huge number of accessories, including two types of chains in black or silver, Dacron cords, hockey sticks and much more. There are even adaptors so that they fit your own hockey sticks.
This is as complete a range of indicators as you could wish for and I absolutely love this stuff. What’s more, it’s all superbly made and is now going to be more available to more anglers. Bravo!
