Pole Fishing For Carp & Tench With Groundbait & Worm

For this episode we took the camera's down to the Cobbleacre Lakes complex in Norfolk, opting to fish the lake known as Amy's lake.

With the session taking place after work, our fishing time was limited, so we wanted to pick a really positive method that would attract feeding fish into the swim as quickly as possible.  We opted to fish with groundbait and worm; a method that in recent years has been used on the match circuit with devastating effect, accounting for some huge winning weights!

First of all, this method doesn't use any fancy rigs or tackle, it's the way you feed your bait and the area you feed it in, which is important.

The idea behind this method is that you feed loose ground bait, the groundbait contains no food particles and is purely designed to colour the water and to add smell and attraction to the swim. You then fish over the top of this attractive cloud using a large hook bait, our chosen bait for this session was the humble worm, in fact two of them to be precise!

How this method works is, the fish are attracted to the groundbait, they are worked into a frenzy by the smell and tiny particles in the water, and are desperate for something to eat. The only food item in the swim is your large strong smelling hook bait which they simply cannot resist and if everything goes to plan they should 'nail' it instantly! This method will work particularly well in the margins and is designed primarily for shallow water, as you are cupping the groundbait in loose, it's vital to have shallow water so an effective groundbait 'cloud' is formed. If the water is too deep only the surface layers will get clouded with the groundbait and that's no good as your hookbait is fished on the bottom.

This method can be particularly deadly for big fish and you can catch some real lumps fishing this way, so make sure you are tackled up appropriately!

If you want to know more about the tackle we used in this video you can check out our tackle list at the bottom of the page.

Anyway, you can see more about the method and how we got on in our session by watching the video below! To watch in HD simply click the little cog in the YouTube player and select 720p or 1080p.
