What is a Carp’s Natural Food?
The natural diet for carp, who are omnivores consists of all sorts of nutrients found in natural bodies of water.
‘Carp is a typical peaceful omnivorous fish that consumes a range of different natural foods, including planktonic crustaceans, insects (including their larvae and pupae), the tender parts and seeds of water plants, and also fish eggs and larvae, as well as smaller fish.’ (Hoole et al., 2001).
As Hoole et al. states and as seen in Table A, a carps natural diet consists of a variety of organisms found in its watery home. The size and the age of the carp depend on how often it feeds on certain food types, for example, larger Broodstock carp will eat all the food types but is mainly attracted to insects and detritus. As anglers we need to always remember that carp will be happy feeding at all levels of the lake, so we need to gear our fishing around their feeding habits and natural food types to maximize our catching opportunities.
Most Popular Types of Carp Bait
Boilies: Small and round, boilies sink when in water and are packed with the nutrients and attractants that will draw a carp into your swim. Ideal for hook bait or chopped for feed. There are two main types: shelf-life and freezer boilies.
Pop-Ups: Impregnated with a floatation material, usually cork, pop-up boilies can make the hookbait float slightly proud of the venue bed which is ideal over snag-prone areas.
Wafters: A form of a pop-up that straddles the gap between a true pop-up bait and a boilie.
Dumbbells: A type of boilie that comes in a barrel shape, potentially giving your hook bait the edge in amongst your freebies.
Pellets: available in a wider range of sizes than boilies, pellets are much softer in the water and will dissolve into a mush when soaked, making them ideal for feeder fishing.
Groundbait: A bait that has been milled to create a fine, almost powdery, substance. Can be thrown into the swim or mixed with additives or particles to form balls that when immersed created a cloud of free bait.
Seeds: A common seed used in carp fishing is hempseed as a particle added to groundbait mixes. Sold either pre-cooked or raw for home preparation, hempseed offers active action, amino acids and natural omega oils which are extremely attractive for carp.
Corn: Sweetcorn is a popular groundbait addition, or can be used as a hook bait or on a hair rig. Sweetcorn works all year round and offers a great visual presence underwater.
Nuts: Helps to add crunchy textures into a groundbait mix, tiger nuts are commonly chopped up for feeds or used as a whole as a hookbait. The sugar content and oils easily attract carp.
Maggots & Worms: A natural bait that carp can easily identify, live hookbait can be devastating in the winter months as its wriggling movement and aroma easily attract carp.
Liquids: Glugs, goos, bait dips, and flavour sprays can be used to increase the potency of baits, enhance flavours or simply added to the water to attract fish to the swim.
Artificial: A bait that can be used time and time again, most often in the form of fake feed corn, sweetcorn, fake maggots, imitation meats or fake bread.
