Angling Direct, Marine Power, Ocean R and Suzuki have formed a powerful collaboration to address the pressing issue of litter and pollution in the River Yare and Norfolk Broads. This joint effort brings together the expertise and resources of these organisations to make a lasting impact on the health and vitality of these precious waterways loved by the angling community.
By combining our strengths, we are actively working towards preserving the ecosystem, protecting wildlife, and ensuring a cleaner future for the local communities who depend on these rivers for their livelihoods and recreational activities.
On Thursday 18th May 2023, the Angling Direct team were invited to attend a River Clean event hosted by Marine Power along with Ocean R & Suzuki on the River Yare and Norfolk Broads.
As part of Suzuki Motor Corporation's ‘Clean Ocean Project’, its teams around the world have been conducting beach and river cleaning activities, these form part of their commitment to look after the marine environment.
Suzuki Motor Corporation has been organising annual ocean and beach clean initiatives on a global scale for the past 10 years. They have recently announced the launch of a micro-plastic collection device for its outboard motors which is a world-first and an extremely innovative concept.
As anglers, Angling Direct are deeply committed to the conservation of our waterways, and the River Yare and Norfolk Broads hold a special place in our hearts. However, these beautiful ecosystems face significant environmental challenges.
Litter and pollution have taken a toll on the health of these water bodies, posing a threat to the fish, aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and the well-being of local communities. The detrimental effects range from water contamination to habitat destruction, jeopardizing the delicate balance of nature.
It is crucial for us to join hands with the community and take collective action to combat these issues. By actively involving ourselves and raising awareness, we can make a tangible difference in preserving the ecological integrity of the River Yare and Norfolk Broads for generations to come.
In 2023, Marine Power teamed up with Suzuki to arrange the destination in the UK for the annual clean to take place. Suzuki decided to collect rubbish from the River Yare and the Broads in Norfolk.
The partnership between Angling Direct, Marine Power, Ocean R and Suzuki represents a united front in the pursuit of environmental sustainability and conservation. Each member shares a strong commitment to safeguarding our natural resources and preserving waters such as the River Yare and Norfolk Broads.
Together, we combine our strengths to organize and execute the clean-up event. With its dedicated angling community. By leveraging our collective expertise, resources, and shared values, we create a formidable force for positive change in revitalizing these cherished water bodies.
Using litter pickers. gloves and bags to collect any rubbish, the group of volunteers that included AD members found and picked litter before taking it away for sorting, recycling and appropriate disposal.
The Clean River session on May 18th, 2023, took no more than 3 hours. A team of volunteers from Angling Direct, Suzuki Global and Marine Power (no more than 20 people) made their way down the river in a selection of boats.
A second team walked the bank collecting rubbish that can’t be reached from the river. Thankfully the teams of litter-picking volunteers were accompanied by a Quad and trailer for the collection of the full bags along the way.
Stephen Crowe from ADTV attended the event. Here is what he had to say about litter picking on the River Yare and the Broads:
“As an angler who often fishes the broads/rivers I was keen to attend the event and help make a difference to the environment we all love so much.
I wasn't sure what to expect from the day however, I must say the event was extremely well run and a real eye-opener to the amount of waste/plastic we are putting into our waterways. Chatting to some of the Ocean R team made me realise the harm plastic is doing to our rivers, the length of time it takes to break down is mind-blowing.
Although we managed to clear a few miles of the river, I feel we as anglers (and non-anglers) need to take more steps to keep our rivers clean, this protects not only our fishing but the wildlife as well.”
Stephen went on to share that the find of the day was a plushie penguin!
Also, a member of ADTV and Angling Direct’s senior photography, Amanda Hook attended the River Clean Event:
“When I heard about the river clean-up, I thought it was a great idea. I was excited to be involved, to lend a hand and be out on the river for the day, even if there was no fishing involved!
I was pretty shocked at how much rubbish we found in such a small part of the Broads which goes to show how much more is still out there…
This is why it’s so important to throw your rubbish in the bin not on the ground, especially near water systems where there’s so much wildlife that it could potentially put in danger. We found all sorts from a giant penguin to shuttlecocks… and hundreds of bottle caps!”
Through our collaborative clean-up efforts, we have achieved significant positive environmental impact in the River Yare and Norfolk Broads. The removal of litter, both visible and microplastics, has helped restore the natural beauty of these waterways.
As a result, the water quality has improved, providing a healthier habitat for aquatic life to thrive. Additionally, our collective actions have contributed to the restoration of vital natural habitats along the riverbanks.
Beyond the physical changes, we are immensely proud of the engagement and awareness generated within the local community and beyond. The clean-up event has inspired individuals to take a proactive role in preserving their natural surroundings, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship.
By instilling a deep appreciation for the environment, we are sowing the seeds for a sustainable future and creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the River Yare and Norfolk Broads.
Angling Direct is thrilled to announce that we will be strengthening our partnership with Marine Power in the future. Together with Suzuki and Ocean R, we plan to further our collective mission of river and ocean conservation.
Our long-term commitment to these efforts goes beyond a one-time clean-up event. We envision ongoing initiatives that focus on not only removing litter but also promoting sustainable practices, raising awareness about the importance of preserving our waterways and implementing measures to prevent pollution.
To achieve lasting change, we recognise the significance of continued collaboration with local communities, businesses, and authorities. By joining forces, we can leverage our combined knowledge, resources, and influence to implement effective conservation strategies, advocate for stronger environmental regulations, and create a network of like-minded individuals and organisations dedicated to the well-being of our rivers.
The successful collaboration between Angling Direct, Marine Power, Ocean R and Suzuki for the river clean-up event on the River Yare and Norfolk Broads stands as a testament to the power of collective action in preserving and restoring our precious waterways.
This initiative has showcased the tremendous positive impact that can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared vision of environmental sustainability. The significance of such initiatives cannot be overstated as they play a vital role in safeguarding the health and well-being of our rivers, wildlife, and local communities.
We encourage readers to support and actively participate in similar environmental initiatives within their own communities, recognizing that every small action can make a meaningful difference. Together, we have the ability to create a future where our rivers thrive, and our natural heritage remains intact for generations to come.
