Tackle Tuesday… Nash H-Gun Reels

Nash H-Gun Reels Review

For 2014 Nash Tackle have released a brand new range of reels! Branded under the H-Gun banner they have been created with the angler on a budget, junior or newcomer in mind.

We recently caught up with Kevin Nash himself, who explained what the reels were all about and why they had been created and added to ever growing Nash range.

‘Why make reels so cheap? The Nash sub brand H-Gun recognizes that an awful lot of people haven't got much spare cash, youngsters have little or are relying on parents, and it could be argued that if you're new to the sport its madness to go spending a lot of money on top end gear if you aren't going to take to it.

As someone mentioned, what you pay for is what you get. Well, I agree with that basic principal; however that doesn't mean you can’t pay a lot less and get something that will do the job. For example, you can buy a brand new car for around £10,000, or a car north of £200,000. Both will get you from A-B reliably and consistently – which, after all, is what they are designed to do, aren't they?

The point I am making is just because we are bringing out really low price reels, that doesn't mean they are going to be rubbish. The whole philosophy of the H-Gun brand came about because there was so much absolute crap at the bottom end, and we were concerned that people taking up carp fishing might have such a bad experience with their gear letting them down that they wouldn't enjoy it, and so give up. The philosophy of H-Gun is to make entry level product which offers reliability and won’t let you down.

I could make another analogy – an H-Gun bed chair. I used one in April on an epic fishing adventure to an island I’d never even heard of until then (you will be able to see this on our 2014 Tackle DVD). I used an H-Gun because we had to fly the kit in and so I didn't want to send my indulgence sleep system over, as I would have nothing to sleep on before I went. The H-Gun bed chair did what it’s meant to do – I got a nights sleep, but I was bloody grateful to get back on my Indulgence Sleep System for the utter luxury it provides.

Comparing with Diawa and Shimano? There is nothing to compare – Daiwa and Shimano are reel specialists. They make the best medium to top end reels. But they can’t get near the H-Guns – which are at least £20 cheaper!

Will Nash bring out top end reels? Only when we believe we have the technical ability and innovation to take the best boys on. We wouldn't, for example, just bring out a reel which is a basically a copy of Daiwa or Shimano, with no unique innovative features. Just like we are proving with bite alarms, if we go into a product area it will only be with the knowledge that we have something better to offer the carp angler.’

There's three reels in the range with two free spool reels (FR5 and FR8) and one big pit (BP10). First of all we’ll start with the freespool models, the Nash H-Gun FR-5 and the Nash H-Gun FR-8, now both these models are the same, the only difference being the spool capacity and size.
