A Successful Week For The Angling Direct Staff!

A Successful Week For The Angling Direct Staff!

It’s been a fantastic week for some of the lads in our Norwich store, with success coming from all angles!

Saturday saw insurance manager Matt Daynes smashing the ton barrier and his PB match weight, with a convincing win at Holly Farm lakes in South Walsham. Matt weighed in over 113lb of Carp, which was enough to see him clinch first place, finishing over 20lb ahead of the nearest pursuer in second.

Matt commented…

‘I drew peg 10, which I quietly fancied, I had plenty of water in front of me and the island peg. Naturally as all anglers would do, I started fishing 11m to corner of the island. I cupped in a decent pot of expander pellets and the fish were soon on them, I didn’t have to wait long for the first Carp. While I was fishing and feeding to the island, I was also quietly introducing a bit of bait to my near side margin and this proved to be a decisive move. After the island line went quiet half way through the match, I switched down the edge and instantly my float buried, for the last two or so hours of the match it was hectic, as the fish just kept on coming!’

Matt’s successful tactics included a Maver Series 2 4x12 pole float, 0.16 Daiwa Super G Line hooklength, and a Daiwa Gamma Power size 16 hook. The baits were kept simple, with 6mm Expander Pellets doing the business.

Staying with match fishing, it was also a successful week for Norwich shop manager Andy Flint. Andy fished the two day festival at Cobbleacre lakes and managed to finish top of the table, finishing a close up 4th on the first day and winning his lake on the second day. These Two solid performances meant his combined points total was a very impressive five points, making it enough to clinch victory over the two days and to scoop the very cool cash prize of £200.

Flinty commented…

‘I wasn’t 100% sure that I’d won, but I felt like I’d put in two solid performances, the 65lb of fish on the second day was enough to win my lake and ultimately the whole festival. I’d like to say a big thanks to Bob at Cobbleacre for putting on such a great event, there was a good turn out and everyone enjoyed a good couple of days fishing.’

Andy FlintWe should also give a mention to Steve ‘Widget’ Crow, who works in the insurance department, here at our Norwich store. Steve, who’s well known on the local match scene, is also a keen Carp angler, so when the chance arose to combine his two skills he jumped at the chance, as this weekend he fished British Carp Angling Championships at Airfield lakes.

For those who don’t know, the British Carp Angling Championships (BCAC) is a series of qualifiers, culminating in a pair of semi-finals and then a final, the events are fished over the course of 48 hours and are open to pairs of Carp anglers.

Steve and his partner Louis Bellchamber ran out rather convincing winners of the first round qualifier at Airfield lakes, finishing with a total of 8 fish for 117lb, over 60lb ahead of the next pair in second place. Setting there stall out from the start, they took an early lead on Friday night managing to land four fish, while everyone else was struggling for a bite. The pair then added a further four fish on Saturday which cemented there place at the top of the leader board, and clinched victory, booking them a ticket into the semi finals.

Steve commented…

‘We caught steadily all through the session and it was especially nice to land a few fish Friday, as it took the pressure off a little! In these events, well in any match fishing scenario, it’s good to get fish in your net as quickly as you can! I think the fact that we didn’t ignore the margins and that we only went with a very light baiting approach paid dividends, I also think that my ‘match’ fishing brain helped us through.

I’m delighted to make it through to the next round, I think it will be a lot tougher but me and bell (partner) are up for the challenge.’
