5 Ways You Can Recycle More - Fishing For A Cleaner Future

With everyone making a keener effort to look out for the environment, as anglers who spend our hobby in the great outside, it is only reasonable that we do our part to help! This is why Angling Direct offer recycling services in your fishing tackle shops for you to bring your used fishing line, batteries, plastics and more.

In this article, we will share with you what recycling services are available in some of your local fishing tackle stores and the importance of recycling items that we use at the bankside. In reading this article, you are taking the first step to become more eco-friendly and fishing for a cleaner future!

1. Recycle Your Used Fishing Line

Along the water's edge, anglers share their peaceful retreat with a wide range of fellow users. Unfortunately, improper disposal of fishing line can be a big problem for boaters and beachgoers alike - not to mention its unsettling effects on nearby wildlife.

As anglers, we understand that the health of our environment and wildlife is paramount. Not only does recycling your fishing line reduce pollution and mitigate hazardous effects on animals - but it also upholds a positive image associated with recreational fishing!

Angling Direct knows that finding time to recycle can be difficult, but doing so will make sure everyone enjoys clean water (and plenty of fish) far into the future.

Over 85% of anglers surveyed said they would be keen to recycle their used fishing line if facilities were available. The good news is that facilities supplied by ANLRS are available at Angling Direct stores, and recycling your fishing line is easy so, doing the right thing has become effortless.

2. Environment-Friendly Shopping Bags

In today's world, many businesses and individuals strive to be more conscious of their ecological footprint. As a result, paper bags have become an attractive solution due to their portability and durability – making them the perfect accessory for any shopping experience while simultaneously helping reduce environmental harm!

At Angling Direct, we care about the fish that make our hobby so much fun. That's why plastic carrier bags have been replaced with biodegradable paper bags since 2018! We care about giving you a sustainable shopping option for your angling needs!

You can use your paper shopping bag next time you visit or simply pop in a paper and cardboard recycling bin! Alternatively, you can pop them in your home recycling bin, or use them for compost!

3. How Do You Properly Dispose of Batteries?

We all have some used batteries from fishing head torches, bite alarms or even the remote of your bait boat to dispose of. The good news is that you can safely dispose of these used batteries in safe battery bins at most supermarkets, hardware stores and even at a couple of your local fishing tackle stores! Angling Direct Cardiff and AD Guildford offer battery bins.

Why Should You Recycle Used Batteries?

Don't just throw dead batteries away - recycle them! Angling Direct will take both single-use and rechargeable batteries off your hands, and send them off to recycling centres which then transform these valuable materials into new products. It's an easy way to do some good for the planet while also freeing up space in your tackle bag!

Can AA batteries go in the bin?

Discarding alkaline batteries in the trash can cause hazardous contamination - it's best to responsibly dispose of them with a battery recycling program, along with AAA, 9V and rechargeable batteries.

4. Types of Recyclable Plastic

PET Plastic: Polyethylene terephthalate is preferred for plastic bottles (and mono line) as it's 100% recyclable and highly sustainable.

HDPE Plastic: High-Density Polyethylene is a Type 2 plastic made from petroleum and commonly used in making containers for milk, shampoos, detergents & bleaches, and even bottle of bait liquid!

PP Plastic: Polypropylene is heat resistant and used in microwavable food containers as well as syrup bottles, medicine bottles & yoghurt containers.

Every year, thousands of animals across the world suffer due to plastic waste. An alarming 8 million tons of this non-biodegradable material is dumped into oceans annually; leading creatures to entangle in it or ingest it. By recycling the 3 types of plastic above using your recycling bin at home or at Angling Direct Cardiff & Guildford, we can help reduce our plastic waste.

Cutting Down on Plastic Packaging

Additionally, Angling Direct has introduced alternative ways to package and present fishing tackle and bait in our stores. One way is by swapping out our single-use plastic bags (used for Pick & Mix Fishing Baits) with bio-degradable bags.

5. Recycle Paper & Cardboard

  • Soiled cardboard containing food, paint, or dirt cannot be recycled.
  • For recycling, remove packing tape, polystyrene inserts or void fill from cardboard packaging.
  • Before recycling your online shopping boxes, check them for staples or stitching.

Every time you recycle, it's more than just a good deed! We recycle around 80% of used paper in the UK and nearly 50% of that recycled paper is used to create the material that makes up sturdy cardboard packaging for food, and tissue boxes, and even to package your fishing tackle! When we conserve resources from our waste stream with recycling, items like paper can be repurposed into everyday items like cereal boxes or fishing magazines or fishing books – ensuring precious natural resources stay in use as long as possible.
