Phoenix Heroes are non-profit community interest organisation that provide support to veterans, their families and carers who are dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) across the UK. Phoenix Heroes work closely with the London Trauma Hub (LTH) with the purpose of presenting academic research which focuses on veterans dealing with PTSD and the benefits outdoor pursuits and employment opportunities can have for them, the research will be presented to Parliament later this year.
Phoenix Heroes have several different schemes which are tailored to assist veterans that suffer from PTSD and those that are homeless. One such scheme revolves around employment opportunities for veterans in the events and security industry, Phoenix Heroes offer training courses to assist in optimising the transferable skills of veterans.
It is not only employment opportunities that Phoenix focus on, outdoor activity days are also popular amongst veterans. Phoenix view carp fishing as a valuable opportunity for veterans to both reflect and bond with likeminded people, the organisation also has access to lakes in Essex and France. With Phoenix being a non-profit community interest group, organising regular fishing days can be problematic, this is where Angling Direct felt they could lend a hand to a fantastic cause, as a result we donated brand new rods and reels to Phoenix Heroes in the hope that this would help establish regular fishing days for the veterans.
This is alongside Angling Direct’s support of the British Disabled Angling Association, who have also teamed up with a group of ex-paratroopers and SAS veterans who have all been injured or suffer from PTSD after serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East. They have recently funded the groups very first family social event, which involved building new accessible fishing platforms to ensure those veterans who have lost lower limbs could also utilise the event.
Angling Direct aims to continue our support for such worthy causes and feels it once again demonstrates the benefits of angling, regardless of age, race, background or fortunes, and the therapeutic qualities our beloved pursuit boasts.
