Perch Bait & Rig with PRAWNS?! – Phil Spinks

Its that time of year again, specimen perch anglers have their window of opportunity to try and better last years PB.

Angling Direct’s very own Phil Spinks offers his thoughts on using the somewhat unusual, but deadly combination of groundbait and prawns, when targeting perch this autumn.

---

First thing is first, you will need to mix your groundbait, heres Phil’s step-by-step guide on exactly how to do that:

1. You will need the following; red maggots, worms, prawns, Sensas 3000 Black groundbait, Dynamite Baits Predator Liquid.

2. Mix up your groundbait, for the perfect consistency leave the groundbait for 20 minutes then riddle to remove any lumps.

3. Add a generous amount of predator plus liquid.

4. Add a few red maggots.

5. Chop up your prawns and worms then add to the mix.

6. For best results bait up with small balls of the mix and fish either worm or prawn over the top.

Now that you have mixed, riddled and balled your groundbait, its time to tie the accompanying rig, this is phils go-to perch prawn rig.

1. You will need the following; mono hooklink, running rig kit, size 8 hook, quickstops, a generous flat-bottomed lead and some sissors.

2. Slide on the run ring, buffer bead then tie on the quick change swivel.

3. Tie a quickstop to approximately 24 inches of the hooklink material then attach the hook using the knottless knot.

4. Slide on your anti tangle sleeve then tie a figure of eight loop.

5. Attach your hooklink to the quick change swivel then clip your weight to the run ring.

6. Using your quickstop needle push the quickstop through the prawn as shown.

7. The finished rig can be deadly for big perch especially if fished over a bed of red maggots.
