7 Essential Items for River Feeder Fishing

In this article, Ade Kiddell shares his love for feeder fishing and some fishing tips to get your feeder fishing ready for the traditional river fishing season.

River feeder fishing is one of my favourite methods of fishing. From the Rhine in Germany to the River Wensum in Norwich, I have feeder fished for many species all over Europe. Wherever I have fished, there are a few fishing tackle items to get to ensure you are fishing comfortably and to get the best from the river.

What is the best feeder for fishing?

Of course, it’s impossible to go feeder fishing without a selection of feeders. I always carry a good selection of various weights and tube sizes, and it's often necessary to change feeder size to suit changing river conditions.

My first-time feeder fishing was when I was 10. This was over 50 years ago. I used one of my mother’s plastic hair curlers to hold some bread crumbs to catch bream. We have come a long way since then! However, the principle is the same. A tube to hold the feed and a weight to hold it down, just make sure you have a selection.

How to Upgrade Your Seat Box

I recently bought a Matrix Duralite platform and have to say it’s transformed my fishing, I am now confident I am sitting comfortably and more important safely in any fishing situation.

The platform is fully adjustable so perfect for seat boxes or even fishing chairs as many use these days. Complete with long legs built-in mud feet and a strong carry bag it’s now an essential item for me.

Best Feeder Fishing Rod

For bite registration when feeder fishing its important whatever rod you chose to have a selection of quiver tips to suit every situation, with heavy feeders and heavy flows or on tidal rivers.

The need to be able to change tips is important if you are going to get the best from your swim. Whatever rod you choose make sure you have a good selection of tips, spare tips are always available from Angling Direct.

What Hooklink Should I Use for Fishing?

Rivers can be so varied and it matters not if it's big fish or small a good reliable hook link is essential, if I could only ever use one line for my hook link then Preston Reflo Powerline would be my choice. I have used this line for many years and it is the number one choice for many top anglers, if you have never used it give it a go you will not be disappointed.

Fishing Reels for Feeder Fishing

I see too many anglers on bigger rivers struggling with small reels which don’t have the winding power or line capacity for the task. Regardless of manufacturer make sure if tackling rivers you use a bigger size fishing reel. My choice is 6000 to 10000 size reels I would rather be oversize than under-gunned. Use a good reliable line, avoid high-tech lines on the spool and look for a robust proven line like Daiwa Sensor.

Best Bait for Feeder Fishing

Worms: Best bait for river feeder fishing. The most natural of bait and gets a bite even on the hardest of day.

Expert Tip: Worms don’t do well in plastic bait tubs and will die very quickly if not looked after. I now use the Cresta EVA micro mesh bait bag. A fantastic item that is perfect for keeping live worms in good condition.

How to Prepare Worms for Feeder Fishing

When feeder fishing regardless of target species, using chopped worms as an attractor in the feeder is a very effective tactic. Ordinary scissors aren’t up to the job, they soon blunt and end up pretty much useless. My favourite for the job is the Cresta worm Scissors. I have had mine for over a year and they are still very sharp and work as well now as when bought.

Groundbait: When fishing rivers a heavier stickier groundbait is required. I only use Sonubaits, I think their So Natural range is perfect along with the Dutch Master mixes.

A particular choice is the Deep Water which has quickly become a favourite to use. Whatever you use make sure it's not a light fluffy mix that’s quickly washed away by the flow of the river.

Sunglasses for Fishing

Glare from the water even on dull days soon gives me a headache so I carry at least 2 pairs of sunglasses some perfect for low light and the other pair are traditional darker sunglasses, the fortis range has never let me down, perfect for every fishing situation.

Fishing Sunglasses for Coarse Anglers
