Well it was this time last year when I boldly stated 'here come the cod' and three weeks later no more showed up. Oops!
However it does look like some are starting to show up in the Thames Estuary and with more reports of fish showing along the east coast things are looking brighter than last year.
We are catching small codling everyday now, most are around 35-40cm but will put on weight quickly. These fish are tight along the coastline inshore but there should be some better ones showing further offshore when the sea temperature drops.
There are good numbers of Thornbacks in most areas, some of the females are around 10lb and there are plenty of smaller ones showing.
There are plenty of whiting in all areas and some of these better fish are getting on for 1lb or so.
The piers and beach marks have been producing good whiting, odd codling and some cracking Thornbacks, the dabs are also starting to come back inshore for the Winter.
There have been a few Gurnards showing with a whopping 4.5lb Tub Gurnard from the Blackwater Estuary last week on Derek Mole's boat Eastern Promise.
Prospects as ever depend on the Cod but it is looking more promising than last season so fingers crossed.
