What a month we have just had, strong to gale force winds almost continuously and very difficult conditions.
When we have managed to get out the fishing has been much harder although there are still some cod around. Most of the bigger fish have moved offshore to spawn leaving just the smaller fish. However there should be an improvement in the new year when our usual run of cod turn up.
There are still plenty of thornbacks around with the first signs of the male fish returning inshore, these fish will be very welcome giving our anglers something to target.
There are plenty of decent whiting in most areas, sometimes three at a time with mackerel, squid and lug baits best.
The estuaries have been steady with plenty of whiting, a few codling and odd thornback, the piers have been quieter but there are still odd codling, plenty whiting and pouting showing on the bigger tides.
Offshore has been quiet with plenty of dogfish, a few thornbacks and odd codling.
Prospects are good for the new year as this has just recently been a good time for a nice mix of cod and thornbacks with plenty of whiting.
