This last fortnight has seen some fantastic sport with plenty of big smoothounds showing up in the shallow water, some anglers have been beating their personal best several times in one day!
The best reported smoothound was a huge fish of nearly 24 lb with plenty around the 15-20lb mark also reported.
The biggest for us was last Monday caught by Erin Rose from Bury St Edmunds with a personal best smoothound of 19lb, not bad for his first ever hound! All these big hounds are taking hermit or soft crab with the odd one occasionally taking squid.
Offshore in general has been excellent with plenty more thornbacks showing up in all areas, there are a real mix of male and female fish of all sizes taking pretty much any baits presented to them.
There are also plenty of smaller hounds to with lots of fish to around 10 lb, these fish will stay with us until well into October, although the bigger females will go south soon.
There are a few more bass showing in most areas and as we get into September they will start to shoal up prior to leaving, so this is a great time to bag a big fish.
There are still odd cod around with the best at 7lb caught at the weekend, these fish have been staying in the Estuaries all summer and the beach and pier anglers have also been catching them.
Inshore has improved with a few more thornbacks starting to show along with some early whiting, odd bass and flatties, the best baits for these as you'd expect, are good quality lug, ragworm, squid and peeler crab. The best times to fish has also been on the bigger tides.
Prospects are excellent with a real variety of fish around and the chance of some real specimens.
