Chinook III Charter Fishing Report – May

The last fortnight has seen settled weather and this has allowed us to get out every day where our anglers have had some excellent sport with a variety of species.

There are more Smoothhounds showing with plenty of fish reported up to 18lb. Most of these bigger fish are taking peeler crab or hermit with the smaller males happy to take squid as well.

There are still stacks of Thornbacks in all areas, the females are dropping their eggs now and will soon be moving offshore, certainly by early June most will be gone from the inshore grounds.

There have been more Bass reported with the biggest at 12lb from the Blackwater Estuary on a private boat, best baits are squid, mackerel and peeler but they will take worms and most fish baits.

The Tope are starting to show and it looks like there are more about this year so far than the last few years. There are already reports of several fish up to 35lb from a variety of areas, best baits are fresh mackerel or garfish but good blast frozen fish baits will catch if that is all you have.

Prospects are excellent. All the summer fish are turning up on time and early signs are that it is going to be a cracking summer.
