Chinook III Charter Fishing Report – May

The last fortnight has been very unsettled with strong winds at times but this has not stopped us from getting out to where the fish are and having some cracking sport.

Inshore There are lots of thornbacks inshore and these fish will be here for another four weeks or so until they have mated and spawned and then will move offshore for the summer.

There are more bass showing too, with the best reported at 8lb caught on The Sophie Lea, most boats saw one or two on Sunday with squid accounting for most of them.

Along with the bass the smoothounds are also now showing inshore with our best on Sunday at around 8lb, these hard fighting fish will take crab, squid and worm baits but their favourite is the hermit crab.

There are a few turbot around with the best reported at 4lb on Derek Mole’s boat Eastern Promise.

Most of the whiting have moved offshore now although there are still some close inshore along with odd pouting and gurnard. The Estuaries and piers are fishing well for most species with the bigger tides always best.

Offshore Offshore is picking up all the time with most of the better smoothounds arriving within the next few weeks, there are more bass showing in all areas offshore too, the best baits for these are squid, mackerel, worm and crab.

There are plenty of thornbacks showing, these fish will stay on the offshore grounds all summer now.

Prospects are excellent; it’s that time of year when lots of different species can be caught.
