Winter will soon be here and, to me, that means chub! Since I am at work for most of the daylight hours during the winter, I'm usually restricted to fishing in darkness!
I like a big smelly bait. Cheesepaste is my favourite bait for after-dark chub fishing and the smellier you can make it the better it is.
By now I've usually made up enough for the coming winter and, once made, I will leave it wrapped up in a plastic bag and let it go off! I've got some bait in my freezer from last year that absolutely reeks.
Once it's in the bags it'll start going mouldy and probably get a skin on it, don't worry about that, it will be fine!
Each mix I make consists of half a slab of pastry, about a pound of mature cheese and half a pound of blue cheese.
I start off by grating the two cheeses and then rolling out the pastry. I then put about a third of the cheese on top of the pastry fold it over and then roll it out again. I then put half of what's left of the cheese on top of the mixture and repeat the rolling again. I out what’s left of the cheese on the top and do one yet another fold and roll.
By then you should have mess everywhere and her or him indoors won't be happy. It will stink! Continue to fold and roll, adding a little flour to you rolling pin to stop it sticking. I sometimes find it easier at this stage to mix it with my hands!
Once I’m happy all the cheese is mixed in, I split it into quarters and bag it up. I then put them in a tub out the way, usually in the shed somewhere.
I find that sometimes, when it's really cold, the paste might be a bit stiff! In these situations, all I do is fish a size 8 swivel on a little hair. I do this just on the bend of the hook otherwise, on the bite, your hook may not pull through the bait!
I've had a lot of success on this bait after dark and in daylight. It's a good bait when the rivers are carrying a bit of colour!
I’m usually out two or three times a week after work, for a few hours at a time, come mid November – once the weed has gone. No matter how cold it is, you can usually get a pull off of a chub. I’ve had them in ridiculous conditions on short after work sessions.
