Beginner's Guide to Waggler Fishing - With Stephen Crowe

In today’s match fishing scene a method that is often neglected is the traditional waggler however, fished in the correct way and on the correct day, it can be devastating.  A really enjoyable way of catching fish, let's talk through when, how and what you need!

When to Use Waggler Fishing Methods

Best used during spring and early summer, aim to use the Waggler on days the sun is popping in and out between clouds. With this kind of weather, you can cast your pole out over the swim and it will cast a shadow. The waggler then lets you cast a little bit further for those scared by the shadow of your pole.

What Do I Need for Waggler Fishing?

Waggler Fishing Rod: When waggler fishing, it’s important to use a dedicated waggler rod, preferably in 13ft, this helps when casting light wagglers. Stephen opts for the Matrix XRC 13ft waggler rod however, does advise any 13ft waggler rod within your budget.

Waggler Float: Having a sensitive float will always help with bite detection however, the main reason Steve opts for the Drennan Visi Waggler is the ability to interchange sizes in seconds.

Fishing Reel: Ensuring your reel is compact and lightweight will make your waggler session more enjoyable, when waggler fishing you find yourself holding your rod and reel for large periods of the day. Mono Line: Stephen uses 4lb Horizon X Mono for all his waggler fishing. The thin diameter helps cast accurately, while still maintaining a high breaking strain to handle lengthy battles with big carp.

Weights: Many use float stops, however, recently changed to cube weights as they are incredibly easy to move, causing no line damage, and secondly allow 95% of the weight to be based around the waggler, this means they cast straight. Guru Micro Cubes – View HERE

Best Baits for Waggler Fishing

Stephen usually feeds with pellets and maggots of the hook as well as feeding a few maggots too. It is also wise to stock up on some expanders and sweetcorn for feeding too. Maggots is a great choice if your venue does not have too many silver fish present.

Catapult out your choice of bait over your waggler float to try get as much interest around your rig as possible. Be sure you do not cast your rig further than your baiting reach.
