Our very own Allan Thornby, AD Ashford shop manager, has recently returned from a weeks Barbel Fishing on the river Wye. Fishing an area known as Ingestone Fishery, Foy near Ross, he had an amazing weeks sport landing huge numbers of hard fighting Barbel.
I recently caught up with Allan and he explained a little more about his week.
"When we first arrived at the river we were a little concerned about how it was going to fish, as a lack of recent rain saw the river running very low and clear, which is not ideal conditions!
However we needn't have worried as it was crazy, we caught fish straight from the off! In-fact I think pretty much every swim we dropped in we caught. We had numerous double takes and hook-ups and they weren't from just small fish either, we landed 25 Barbel over 7lb!
The river is such a special place, not only because of it's grand beauty, but because of the angling opportunities! As well as the Barbel we landed numerous big Chub, Grayling, Roach and Perch - and all this in conditions which were meant to be poor! It had me wondering whatever would the place fish like when conditions were right!!!
Overall for the week I ended up with 44 Barbel to 8lb 14oz, with the final breakdown reading something like this... 1x 4lb, 8x 5s, 10x 6s, 15x 7s, 10x 8s
Oh and I also had 25 chub to 4lb 2oz!"
A large open ended feeder filled with Marukyu Focus Amino Pellets in 4mm and 6mm, plugged with Deep Impact Groundbait, fished on a running rig accounted for the majority of the fish. With a hair rigged Marukyu Krill Boilies sprayed with their new 'The One' Amino Spray being the hook bait of choice.
