I’ve been slacking a tad lately but got out this week for 36 hours with a target of a double figure bream,
Arriving late in the evening I used a plain lead on a marker rod to find a large gradually sloping area of weed less lakebed at thirty yards out. I chose to fish three rods spread along this slope, ranging in depth from 5.5 ft down to 9ft at the other end. This lake is not known for throwing up large numbers of bream, and one or two a night is what can be expected. So I decided to go against my usual heavy baiting tactics and for the first night at least I’d only cast in my method rig, only recasting if I’d received a take.
My rigs were made up of 2ft of Korda Dark Matter tubing to a 1oz inline textured lead, beneath this a short 4” hook length made of ESP Sink Link in 10lb breaking strain, to a size 12 Korda Kurv Shank Hook on two rods and a size 10 on the other, two rods were baited with two grains of real corn and one grain of false. The mix to mould around the lead consisted of 1 part Sonubaits Supercrush Green, 1part Supercrush Krill and 1 part Sonu Match Method Mix Dark, plus half a tin of corn and three handfuls of mixed halibut pellets.
Lines were walked out on the ground and marked off with pegs in the ground to give a visual reference should I need to remark my rods.
I lost one which felt and looked a comfortable double and had a 8lb 12oz fish on the first night, plus a Tench. Not a bad start, which confirmed to me that it was worth trying the same tactics for the rest of the session.
Later that morning just before noon I had another take which resulted in the cracking fish pictured at 11lb 2oz. I was absolutely thrilled to have caught the double with not too much hassle and another night to go.
The rest of the day went by with only another two small Tench and a pesky Carp to break the silence.
The second night soon loomed so I recast all three rods for the first time in the session. A screaming take woke me with a start and I was into another Carp. A small stocky of about six pound which I have to admit I’d have preferred not to have caught given the chance of it spooking some wary Bream.
I needn’t have worried as minutes later another Bream take signaled lazily on one of the corn rods. It felt another good fish which was confirmed when the scales span round to 9lb 8oz.
This was a nice way to end the session and a happy start to my autumn.
